Sarah Sugden's (Katie Hill) world has fallen apart in Monday's (7 September 2026) dramatic instalment of Emmerdale, as grandmother Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) revealed the depths of her deception.

The action picked up immediately after Charity stopped Sarah in her tracks, as she prepared to hand herself in for Doctor Caitlin Todd's (Caroline Harker) murder.

Having told Sarah that baby Leyla wasn't actually Sarah's daughter, Charity braced herself to go through every detail, while Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) headed to the Woolpack to give them some space.

Charity explained that when, last year, she had begun bleeding, they all assumed the embryo implantation hadn't worked – and so she had drunken sex.

Todd had later uncovered the baby's true parentage due to her blood group, and after blackmailing Charity failed, she sexually assaulted Charity.

As she took it all in, Sarah refused to believe that Mack would have gone along with allowing her to raise his own child.

Of course, Charity had to admit that Leyla wasn't Mack's – she was the result of a fling with Ross Barton (Michael Parr).

Emotions boiled over and Sarah called Charity some strong-worded names, leading Charity to slap her.

Charity was apologetic for lashing out, but Sarah demanded to know how far this secret had spread, so Charity summoned those in the know – Mack, Ross and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter).

As he cradled Leyla, Sarah's husband Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) was baffled as he watched the trio all look at their phones and leave at exactly the same time.

When Chas tried to appeal to Sarah over just how desperate Charity had been, Sarah saw red, feeling like they had all been laughing at her.

She pointed out that Chas knew how it felt to lose a child, but Chas insisted that Sarah's experience with Leyla was not the same situation.

Sarah then turned her attention to Ross for constantly sleeping around, and then it was Mack's turn as he assured her he hadn't known the full truth for long.

Sarah's fury gave way to fresh horror as she contemplated how on earth she was going to tell Jacob.

Charity suggested that nothing had to change, but Sarah raged that she still didn't understand the magnitude of her betrayal, and she ordered Charity out of her life forever.

Where do they go from here?
