The story follows an American expat in Japan named Suzie Sakamoto (Jones), whose husband Masa (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and young son are suddenly killed in a plane crash, leaving her world decimated.

Her husband's former employer gifts her an artificially intelligent robot as a condolence gesture, with the bright and optimistic Sunny (voiced by Joanna Sotomura) being the last thing that Suzie wants in her life at that moment.

However, it soon becomes clear that this smart device could be the key to unravelling the secrets that Masa was keeping in the months leading up to this death.

Sunny is based on a book titled The Dark Manual by Irish author Colin O'Sullivan, who told The Irish Times that he was surprised at the direction that screenwriter Katie Robbins took while adapting the source material.

"When they first showed interest in it as a TV show, my initial thoughts were, 'This is going to be a Handmaid’s Tale kind of thing'. It’s going to be dark and serious," he recalled.

"And then they called me up and they were, like, 'This is going to be a dark comedy.’ It was surprising. I’m really enjoying that aspect of it now."

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Robbins explained that she used the novel as a "jumping off point", but accepted that she took O'Sullivan's story in an entirely different direction.

"There was a kernel of a story within Colin’s beautiful novel... but there were different kinds of themes I wanted to talk about in terms of female friendship and in terms of loneliness, and so I sort of spun that kernel on its head," she said.

"I think that the art of adaptation is a bit of a relay race. You take the baton and you run… and I think you have to have the freedom to be able to do that."
