Apple TV's alternate-history space race drama Star City, the first spin-off from For All Mankind, has concluded its eight-part first season – leaving fans eager for more.

The exceptional thriller swiftly won over critics with its tense, paranoid look at the Soviet space programme, taking viewers far behind the Iron Curtain.

Created by For All Mankind's Matt Wolpert, Ben Nedivi and Ronald D Moore, the series follows cosmonauts, engineers and KGB officers as the USSR races to reach the Moon first.

Rhys Ifans and Anna Maxwell Martin lead a stellar ensemble, so it is little surprise that fans are already asking whether a second season is on the cards.

As things stand, Star City has not been officially renewed for a second season by Apple TV.

Season 1 was announced alongside the renewal of parent show For All Mankind in April 2024, but Apple's press materials at launch covered the debut run only, with no confirmation of further episodes.

There has been much online speculation about what its future could look like, but no credible confirmation as of yet, with its fate likely to rest on how much viewership and prestige it can bring to Apple TV.

We'll update this page when further details emerge.

Could Star City return?

The show's reviews are certainly encouraging, with critics praising Anna Maxwell Martin's turn as KGB colonel Lyudmilla Raskova and the show's moody, unnerving atmosphere.

As a spin-off designed to expand the For All Mankind universe, Star City could certainly attract new viewers, sci-fi lovers and astrophiles to one of Apple TV's longest-running franchises, expanding its majesty in the world of streaming.

Apple typically takes several weeks or months after a premiere to weigh a renewal, so a decision either way may take a while.

What could happen in Star City season 2?

Season 1 charts the Soviet drive to be first to the Moon, with attention to the state surveillance that pervades Star City and the personal toll of life under an authoritarian regime.

A second season would likely push further into the space race against the United States and deepen the intrigue around the KGB's monitoring of cosmonauts and engineers.

In accordance with the wider For All Mankind timeline, hypothetically speaking, there would be plenty of room to explore where the alternate history of the Soviet Union went next.
