Over the course of 4 seasons, the citizens of Fromville have gone through the ringer. Weird nocturnal monsters, mysterious rituals and strange time-travel shenanigans are just the tip of the iceberg. And with season 4 now concluded and a fifth and final season on the horizon, we’re still left with more questions than answers.

From centres around an ensemble of people led by Harold Perrineau’s de facto sheriff Boyd who have found themselves trapped in a strange town full of all manner of monsters.

It’s one of the most compelling shows on TV right now but it’s also one of those classic mystery box shows that asks more questions than it answers. Or at least that has been the case up until now. Following on from the finale of season 3, season 4 offers us more insight into the true nature of Fromville as well as teasing answers to some of the shows biggest questions.

Thankfully, the shows star has promised we’re in good hands. "Here's the thing that's been really great and creative about the way that John's written some of the stuff," Perrineau told Radio Times. "Some of the answers, some of the clues, are so subtle that you are not going to know for a long time. And some of [the clues] are really big, so you'll be able to make big guesses about them, about connections with the town, and connections with the creatures."

What exactly is going on with Fatima? Who or what is the Man in Yellow and will they figure out his latest disguise? And will Jade’s plan work?

Read on for a full breakdown of the finale of From season 4.

From season 4 ending explained: What happened in the finale?

Over the course of the season, we’ve been slowly building a number of key storylines as Sophia, AKA The Man in Yellow, continues to subtly influence (and sabotage) events across the town, Jade and Tabitha seek more information about their past lives, Julie continues her adventures in ‘story-walking,’ and Boyd seeks more information about who or what The Man in Yellow actually is.

All of this built to a head in the seasons penultimate episode, with Tabitha and Jade finding the bones of the sacrificed children while Boyd, despite Victor’s protestations, readies to cut down the bottle tree. Meanwhile, Elgin has discovered a photo of Sophia that suggests she may not be what she seems, leading to Clara locking them inside of the Diner.

And that’s without mentioning the fact that Fatima is technically dead, bares the same markings as the creatures and may or may not be able to control them. Needless to say, things looked pretty sketchy when we last left the residents of Fromville.

The finale picks up with Tabitha and Jade in the chamber having found the bones of the children only to notice they are surrounded by the creatures who deliver one of their trademark ominous warnings. Meanwhile, Boyd and the others wait (very) impatiently above ground for a signal to pull the bottle tree.

Despite Tabitha's protestations, Jade signals for Boyd to pull the tree and the creatures enter the chamber. Thankfully, the creatures are much the same as us in a heat wave and can't step into the light, giving Tabitha and Jade a window of time to escape.

Of course, Sophia had very unhelpfully sabotaged the rope ladder they planned to use to escape the chamber leaving Tabitha and Jade trapped as the sky turns dark stealing away the protection of the sunlight and letting the creatures transform ready to do what they do best. But before the feast can kick off, an earthquake starts to destroy the chamber leaving Tabitha and Jade huddled in the corner and the others above ground exposed to the slowly encroaching creatures.

Meanwhile, as Fatima takes refuge in the clinic questioning Marielle's tests, she begins seeing the world from Smiley's perspective as he approaches the clinic. As the earthquake has knocked down the talisman protecting the clinic, Smiley is able to get inside where he proceeds to slash Marielle's stomach and is only stopped when Fatima lets out the kind of loud scream we've come to associate with the creatures.

Seemingly surprised about the new revelation, Smiley leaves as an afraid Marielle resists Fatima's help. Just as Kristy and the others arrive, Marielle succumbs to her injury's in an heartbreaking moment and we get our first major character death of the finale.

Picking up with Henry, after he was told that the events in the town are a dream and that the only way to escape is to kill Victor, his anchor in the dream, he discovers bullets in his room. Interpreting signs like the sky going dark in the middle of the day and the sudden discovery of the bullets, Henry starts to believe his visions before retrieving the gun from the sheriffs station.

Henry confronts Victor telling him that he believes what's happening to be a dream before Victor manages to stop him from pulling the trigger just as Ethan enters the room.

As Boyd comforts a devastated Kristy in one of the shows most heartbreaking moments, things go from bad to downright apocalyptic as a red lightening bolt shoots from the hole in the ground where the bottle tree used to stand. The lightening spreads across the sky, crackling into a strange red storm overhead that has everyone wondering if maybe they should have listened to Victor and not pulled out the bottle tree.

Down in the tunnels, Tabitha and Jade attempt to remove out the bars keeping them trapped eventually resolving to use the bones to help dig them out. Meanwhile, Boyd, Ellis and Fatima head into the tunnels to find them using Fatima's unpredictable monster-radar to help guide them. Tabitha has a vision while holding one of the skulls of one of the children just as they hear the dulcet tones of a creature screaming just beyond the bars. "Oh, f**k," Jade says.

"Oh, f**k," indeed.

With the creatures fast approaching, Boyd, Ellis and Fatima reach Jade and Tabitha where they help them to destroy the bars and get free. Only the creatures are here and there's no escape. It's at that moment that Fatima tells them to leave before transforming into a creature herself.

The last we see of her is as the others manage to escape just as she, in her new monstrous form, confronts the creatures. Is she dead? Do they make it out of the tunnel? What the heck is going on? We'll have to wait for season 5.

Before the credits roll, we check in with Sophia one last time as she meets with a now grown Boy in White, who tells her that she will lose this time. Sophia doesn't seem convinced as she disposes of the talismans into one of the faraway trees.

What does he mean 'this time'? What exactly is Sophia planning? What exactly did they unleash when they felled the bottle tree? And how will Boyd react when he notices all his talismans are gone? Again, we'll have to wait for season 5.

With season 5 of the show set to be its last, we can expect major revelations and answers to some of the shows biggest questions. We'll just have to wait a little while longer.

What is Sophia (AKA The Man in Yellow) planning?

We don’t get any major answers in the finale about Sophia’s exact plans, however we do know that it involves praying on the more vulnerable residents of Fromville.

Sophia continued her recruitment drive by trying to convince Elgin to help her in return for being freed from the town and getting to go home. It's here that the finale gives us our second major character death as Elgin refuses Sophia's ‘bargain’ (a word that further hints at her devilish nature) only for her to immediately kill him using some strange unseen power that makes him bleed from the eyes, nose and mouth.

Emboldened by her latest kill, Sophia leaves the diner ready to, as she puts it, "light the match and I watch it burn".

She then proceeds to go door to door around the town taking down and stealing the protection talismans, alongside a reluctant Clara.

The finale doesn’t give us much more to go on other than the fact that Sophia is trying to create chaos in the town and that this is something she’s done many times before. A combination of sabotage, taking away their protection and striking bargains with the townsfolk seems to be key elements in her plan.

The question is, will she remain in the form of Sophia or will she transform again as she continues to manipulate the residents? Oh, and it was her blood that seemingly tipped Fatima over the edge into full blown monster.

Speaking of which…

What’s going on with Fatima?

Fatima, it appears, is turning into one of the monsters. For now, she seems to still have her own mind but that could change as her transformation becomes more permanent.

That is if she makes it out of the cave alive at the end of the finale. We know that thanks to her pregnancy and Sophia’s blood, she can see what the creatures see and sense their presence – and we also know that she can transform into the same supernaturally monstrous form as them.

Does that mean she’ll be a villain if she comes back in season 5? Who knows.

Did Jade’s plan work?

Yes and no. We know from the final moments with Sophia and the Boy in White that uprooting the bottle tree was a bad idea.

We know that it removed some of whatever protection the residents had up to that point. However, we also know that Jade’s plan to retrieve the bones of the children was, as he suspected, a key step in solving whatever is going on in Fromville.

While we don’t know exactly what the bones mean and how they’ll help, we do know that getting the bones in the finale is a rare and much needed win for the residents. Sophia doesn’t seem too bothered about them having the bones at the moment but that might change if they figure out what to do with them in season 5.
