DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has given fans an update on a potential Lanterns return for season two – and it’s both good and bad news.
The HBO Max series, starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as John Stewart and Hal Jordan, ended its first season run last week with some major twists setting the stage for what’s to come in the DC Universe.
While Pierre is set to make an appearance in upcoming Superman movie Man of Tomorrow, it’s still not been confirmed if Lanterns will return for a second season, despite favourable ratings.
Speaking to Collider, Safran confirmed fans will know the fate of the show by the end of the year, and that a writers’ room was in place to build a plan for a second season should they get the green light.

"This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right?" he said.
"The thing that's most gratifying about this show and this season on HBO is that it's brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion."
He added: "If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season."
The Lanterns season finale left multiple questions about what lies ahead for the intergalactic cops, including what John Stewart's future might look like and if Hal Jordan could ever return.

In the meantime, the DC Universe – helmed by James Gunn and Safran – is continuing to expand with the release of new movie, Clayface, which is coming to cinemas on 23 October.
The movie will follow Hollywood superstar Matt Hagen, whose life is changed forever when he's left disfigured after an attack by a crime boss in Gotham.
Agreeing to a radical new technology to restore his appearance, the results sets him down a dark path for revenge.
