Adapted from a popular series of Chinese web novels, this new anime drama takes place in a fantasy universe inspired by Victorian England, including elements of Lovecraftian horror.

Riffing off the classic isekai trope, its lead character is a young Chinese man named Zhou Mingrui, who transmigrates into the body of a university graduate named Klein Moretti, who lives in a parallel universe.

Along with navigating a completely new life, Zhou also discovers that this parallel world includes supernatural entities. Hoping to find a way back home, he starts developing magical powers of his own.

What's the plot of Lord of Mysteries?

After waking up in a new body in a parallel steampunk universe, Lord of Mysteries protagonist Zhou faces new challenges. According to Crunchyroll’s plot summary, this includes dealing with “Klein’s scattered memories,” a mysterious ancient prophecy, and a group of shadowy strangers who appear to be following Zhou around.

The show's fantasy setting includes people known as Beyonders, who can wield supernatural powers. However the process to become a Beyonder can be very dangerous.

Tarot cards are also a major element of the story’s worldbuilding, with Zhou/Klein creating an organization known as the Tarot Club during his quest to gain more power and figure out how to return to his own dimension.
