The Gilded Age season 4 is heading to screens sooner rather than later, with HBO now confirming the release date of the fourth season of Julian Fellowes's opulent period drama.

It's been announced that the season will premiere on Sunday 1 November on HBO and stream on HBO Max at 9pm ET/PT in the US – with the news arriving alongside a first-look teaser. In the UK, the series is available to watch on Sky Atlantic, NOW and HBO Max.

The newly released teaser sets the tone of the new instalment early on. Coon's Bertha is heard saying: "We are truly being tested. We must fight with every tool we have."

With snapshot scenes of the tense president's dinner, discussion of "sordid details", men barging into homes and opulent opening nights, it sure looks like the new season has plenty to look forward to.

The date confirmation follows earlier HBO Max messaging that the drama was back in production and "coming this fall", firming up a long-teased autumn return. Well, it turns out that for US fans, it'll be landing in time for their national holiday of Thanksgiving.

The eight-episode run picks up the fallout from Bertha Russell's social manoeuvring, with a season 4 logline that warns viewers to "be careful what you wish for".

It reads: “Bertha Russell (Coon) changed Society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) seizes an opportunity to regain her position.

“Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) forges a new path for herself and Peggy (Denée Benton) works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”

Season 3 left plenty of threads dangling, with a cliffhanger at the end of the season 3 finale leaving viewers pining for more.

Returning cast includes Cynthia Nixon, Blake Ritson, Ben Ahlers, Audra McDonald, Kelli O'Hara, Nathan Lane's stage contemporaries Donna Murphy and Debra Monk, plus Phylicia Rashad, Bill Camp and John Douglas Thompson.

Newcomers joining for the fourth season, revealed in the earlier season 4 casting news, include Dennis Haysbert, Jim Gaffigan, Andrew Burnap, Elizabeth Marvel and Adrienne Warren. Morgan Spector, meanwhile, has since been cast as Dan Brown's Robert Langdon in a new Netflix series.

Created, written and executive produced by Fellowes, The Gilded Age is a co-production between HBO and Universal Television. Salli Richardson-Whitfield produces and directs, with Sonja Warfield writing and executive producing alongside Gareth Neame, David Crockett, Bob Greenblatt and others.
