Lupin, Netflix's hit mystery thriller about a man inspired by gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, now has four seasons under its belt – which is no small feat in the current streaming economy.

But as Omar Sy told Radio Times, while "it's amazing to have four seasons of a show... it's like in life, the older you get, the end, it's closer."

There's certainly an air of finality when the latest chapter opens. Assane Diop is ready to retire his scheming and focus on his family, committing to being fully present in his son Raoul's life. But when a copycat Lupin carries out two simultaneous heists, Assane reluctantly breaks out of prison in a bid to prove his innocence – which triggers destructive habits.

"Everyone knows that it's difficult for him to change and not be Lupin again," acknowledged Sy. "It is really addictive, it's very hard to quit."

But this is a man who does want to do better, especially for Raoul – which means there will come a time when he must put a life of crime firmly behind him.

What would be the right – rather than Sy's preferred – ending look like for Assane after everything the character has been through?

"I think on this show, probably the right thing for the actor is going to be the right thing for character because I'm involved in the writing process," laughed Sy.

"So I'll make sure that it's going to have the ending that I wish for him... which is him finally finding peace, you know. Because from the first season, it's been Assane struggling to be Assane and Lupin; both sides of him are really in a kind of schizophrenic crisis.

"So being able to live with both [sides of him] in peace, and finally being the father he wants to be. I really wish that for him."

So while we don’t expect Assane to leave Lupin behind entirely, we hope his sticky fingers will become a thing of the past.
