Marking the first in-depth documentary about the actor and featuring testimonies from some of the people who knew him best, The One About Matthew Perry premieres on Netflix on Monday 27 October.

Central to the documentary is Perry's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, who provides never-before-heard testimony alongside close friends and creative collaborators. The series also features unreleased photos and videos from the Perry family's private archive, and traces his journey from rising comedic star to world-famous celebrity.

Perry played the quick-witted Chandler Bing across all 236 episodes of Friends between 1994 and 2004, starring alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.

His other credits included the romantic comedy Fools Rush In, 17 Again and the sitcom The Odd Couple, which he co-created and starred as Oscar Madison.

Away from acting, Perry was outspoken about the pain behind his comedy, which stemmed from his battle with addiction. He died following an accidental overdose in Los Angeles in October 2023, at the age of 54.

Director Mary Robertson said the aim of the three-parter was to reveal the person behind the public figure. "Matthew Perry was one of the comedic geniuses of our time," she said. "Through his many films, TV, and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing, he made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone. He also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story."

Bowick said it had taken time to feel ready to share her memories. "It's taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life, to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction," she said.

She added: "Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved. I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind."
