The rumours were true! As was widely reported last month, Warhorse Studios are now officially confirmed to be working on a Lord of the Rings game.

Warhorse is the company behind the beloved medieval knight game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which picked up the BAFTA Games Award for best narrative in April.
In KCD2, and the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance that came before it, you play an up-and-coming knight called Henry, riding horses, getting into sword fights and exploring a vast open world full of rich storytelling.
Making those games seems to have been perfect preparation for Warhorse as they embark on a quest of their own, to bring a memorable gaming experience to fans of The Lord of the Rings.

Warhorse announced the news on their social media accounts, saying, "You might have heard the rumours, it's time to reveal what we are working on."
The social post then listed two projects: "An open world Middle-earth RPG" and "A new Kingdom Come adventure."
Any fans that were worrying that LotR would get in the way of KCD can, by the sounds of it, put those fears behind them. Warhorse is working on the two franchises concurrently, and we're very intrigued to see what they come up with.
Behind the scenes, Warhorse has been moved by their parent company (Embracer) into a new company called Fellowship Games, which is said to be focused on "IP-led" games.
Other studios including Crystal Dynamics (who are working on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis) and 4A Games (Metro 2039) are also moving into Fellowship Games.
This also follows reports that Amazon had cancelled a massively-multiplayer online Lord of the Rings game. But we're very happy to be getting a role-playing game from Warhorse instead.
We asked Tom McKay (who voices Henry in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchise), at the BAFTA Games Awards in April, which character he would want to play in The Lord of the Rings universe.
"There are loads," he told us. "You know, those worlds are filled with such incredibly rich complex characters. I mean, definitely a kind of Aragorn vibe would be great.
"But there are so many. And actually, if I were to do it – and I flatter to think that anybody would want me to do it – I'd probably rather nudge it away from the Henry vibes a little bit. I quite like playing a sort of broad palette of characters."

Of course, video game development is a process that takes multiple years, so we wouldn't expect to see much progress on the new Lord of the Rings game in the near future.
It could be several years into the future before we have a release date for the game. We'd love to be surprised on that front, but it's worth remembering that open-world games do take a long time to make.
As and when we do hear more on the progress of this exciting new LotR game, we'll be sure to keep you updated. Watch this space, precious.
