If you’re unfamiliar with the Green Game Jam, allow us to shed some light. This is an annual event, put on by a not-for-profit organisation called Playing for the Planet, and it always kicks off on World Environment Day on Friday 5 June - that’s today, fact fans!
Here in the UK, you only need to look at the weather recently to increase your worry levels about the climate crisis, so it’s nice to see this many gaming companies coming together to do something about it.
The companies taking part in the Green Game Jam will all have themed activity going on in their games in the coming weeks.
We’ve been told that you can expect “coral reef and rainforest themed content, events and challenges” in all 70 of the titles involved. This could be anything from cosmetic items to full-on experiences.
Those titles are spread across PC, console and mobile, with Playing for the Planet estimating that 63 million daily active users will be reached by this activity.
The official press release tells us that this year’s event will "raise awareness and vital funds for reef and rainforest ecosystems."
The two charity partners this year are the Rainforest Alliance and Oceana, so please check out their websites if you’d like to learn more.

For the Rainforest Alliance, proceeds from this event will be going towards their Forest Allies project, which supports communities to stop deforestation, restore damaged areas, and promote the responsible management of tropical forests in places like Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Cameroon and Indonesia.
As for Oceana, that charity will put funds from this event towards saving the coral reefs of the Mexican Gulf, protecting deep sea corals in Europe, and campaigning to reform the constitution in Belize to protect marine life.
To learn more about the Green Game Jam, check out the Playing for the Planet website. And be sure to jump into those games during the event if you can!
