Following non-stop leaks and rumours, the latest game in the God of War series was finally confirmed as part of last night's PlayStation State of Play.

Four years on from Kratos and Atreus's last outing in God of War: Ragnarok, developer Sony Santa Monica is returning with a new blockbuster chapter of the story in God of War Laufey.

And a new chapter it certainly is, with pre-show rumours that the game would eschew Kratos in favour of his wife Faye as the game's protagonist.

In a post to the PlayStation blog, here's how developer Sony Santa Monica describes the game:

"Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.

"To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic."

The news came with a 20-minute gameplay trailer, setting the scene and introducing us to Faye, played by Daredevil's Deborah Ann Woll.

In the Everywhen, she meets sentient gelatinous cube Phranque, played by Jack Quaid from The Boys, and talking sword Rue, played by Perlina Lau of Friday Night Bites and Creamerie.

The game offers players "intimate, brutal combat," with "exploration of a rich, beautiful world".

In a bid to set Faye's gameplay apart from Kratos, the developers have "been handcrafting a uniquely fresh feel".

This takes the form of fast, fluid combat both in the air and on the ground, combo and juggling potential, as well as making use of her status as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar.

Faye will be able to strike enemies with her golden palm to detach their souls from their bodies, before subsequently attacking the souls themselves or knocking them into other enemies.

Unfortunately, while 20 minutes was plenty of time to share all sorts of news about the new game, one thing we did not hear about was a release date.

For that, we're going to have to wait, but with the likes of GTA 6 still to come in late-2026, we think that anything earlier than a 2027 release would be wishful thinking.

God of War Laufey is currently in development for PlayStation 5.
