After weeks of rumours on social media, Activision has finally confirmed that the next Call of Duty game will be Modern Warfare 4.

Since first releasing in 2005, CoD has released on a yearly cycle, with new main-series games arriving every single year since Call of Duty 2.

And 2026 will be no different, with a return to the hugely popular Modern Warfare series arriving on 23 October 2026.

As predicted by leakers, the story will focus on a war on the Korean Peninsula.

In a press release on the game's official website, the game's story is described as follows:

"War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilise the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

"A young squad of South Korean soldiers fights to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him.

"As Price's off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone's control."

The campaign will see players take on maps as varied as trench warfare in Korea, urban warfare in New York and Paris, SAS raids in Mumbai and more.

Multiplayer is also set for plenty of changes, with it set to deliver "grounded, precise combat where fluid movement, player choice, and greater control define every engagement".

Young Mazino, known for his roles in Beef and The Last of Us will voice the campaign's main character, South Korean soldier Private Park.

One surprising aspect of the announcement is the confirmation that, while the game will not be coming to last-gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, it will be launching on Nintendo Switch 2 – the first time the series has come to a Nintendo console in more than a decade.

Considering the poor reception of Black Ops 7's campaign and the success of Battlefield 6, fans will no doubt be hoping that Modern Warfare 4 represents a return to form for the blockbuster series.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on 23 October 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
