AC Black Flag review round-up

We've also looked at a range of reviews from critics to help give you an idea of the consensus regarding Ubisoft's much-anticipated remake.

IGN - 9/10

"More than just the game you remember but shinier and better looking, it’s also an attempt to bring Black Flag’s systems and sensibilities up to today’s standards." - Jarrett Green

PC Gamer - 75/100

"Resynced is decent, but it takes away more than it adds, as if Ubisoft wasn't confident in the hit game it made 13 years ago. It's a conflicted remake that's worth a look, but is ultimately inessential." - Morgan Park

Destructoid - 9

"A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage. Black Flag might be Resynced, but its heart remains. In many ways this remake is a one-to-one carbon copy of the original, with some annoying bits shaved off and the good parts improved." - Andrej Barovic

Eurogamer - 3/5

"Kenway's story is somewhat timeless: the moral tale of a man forsaking his previous life and identity in search of gold and glory. I'm not sure it will ever get old. But I can't help but think of the background tragedy of his life being something of a mirror for Ubisoft here in 2026. Restless, agitated, unable to let a legacy rest, striking out in search of something greater: a retread of a highest ebb, a victory lap after a finest hour." - Dom Peppiatt

GamesRadar - 3.5/5

"Decent improvements are here that I'd still recommend it to a lot of players interested in a pirate adventure, but I also think moment-to-moment the original game remains enjoyable and has better combat and more interesting challenges (especially if you can play it on PC with a stable higher framerate) – leaving me in that tricky position of having no firm favourite." - Oliver Taylor-Kent

GameRant - 9/10

"At its best, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced firmly establishes the formula for new remakes in the franchise, if not what all new Assassin's Creed games in 2026 and beyond should feel like. At its absolute bottom-of-the-ocean worst, it's a reminder of what made the Assassin's Creed franchise the beloved game series it was in the first place." - Joshua Duckworth

Game Informer - 8.25

"For me, a lot of the joy and excitement of Assassin’s Creed comes from visiting a new era in history and rediscovering the series’ conflict through the lens of that time and place. This return to a familiar locale lacks that, but it should still offer it for newer players who never experienced the game more than a decade ago." - Matt Miller
