Summary

The teacher and students of a high school sociology class tackle a mystery that has remained unsolved for decades in a three-part docuseries directed by Stacey Lee, based on a true crime podcast. For a classroom project, teacher Alex Campbell and the students of Elizabethton High School pore over the evidence of the Redhead Murders. The unsolved killings captured headlines from the late 1970s but have largely been forgotten. Students uncover new leads and connect overlooked clues, kickstarting a real-world investigation that brings fresh attention to victims who were nearly forgotten. The teenagers learn the power of giving a voice to others as they work together to solve the case

Jack Seale

“You always hear rumours about Mr Campbell being that crazy teacher, but everybody wants to be in his class.” True-crime documentaries tend to be dour grinds, but not this one: investigating the 40-year-old cold case of an unknown serial killer is a group of high-school students from Tennessee, led by their eccentric teacher Alex Campbell.

They’re much more engaging than a hoary old police officer, so it’s thrilling when they get close to a breakthrough, but Mr Campbell is just as interested in teaching his wards about the lives of the killer’s female victims. His lesson, that serial-killer victims are so often lost outsiders whose struggles make them vulnerable, is a thought-provoking one.
