Review
Paul Whitelaw
The undisputed king of kitsch, Barry Manilow is an endearing entertainer who’s fully aware of how he is perceived by humourless critics who don’t understand the appeal of OTT torch ballads and frisky disco camp.
That self-aware charm and pop nous are thrust to the fore in this compilation of clips from his visits to the BBC during the last five decades. There are fabulous performances of all the big Baz hits — Copacabana, Could It Be Magic, Mandy etc — plus snippets from memorable interviews with Michael Parkinson. Later on BBC2 there are repeats of One Night with Barry Manilow (9.25pm), Barry Manilow at the NEC 1989 (11.10pm) and Barry Manilow at Proms in Hyde Park (12 midnight).
