While it’s never a good sign when gangsters pop up in EastEnders, audiences welcome them almost everywhere else. From The Sopranos to Peaky Blinders, our appetite for tales of the criminal underworld is well-fed but remains ravenous. Crime family sagas are a flavour, not just of the moment, but of the times.
And so to Mint, Charlotte Regan’s transplant of Romeo and Juliet to central Scotland. As befits a writer-director who made her feature film Scrapper because “growing up, all I saw was films where everyone working class was depressed and I wanted to make something with them happy”, Mint is an offbeat, leftfield look at a crime family’s dynamics through three generations of women.
The Juliet of proceedings is Shannon (Emma Laird), caught between the romantic whimsy of her mother Cat (Laura Fraser) and the sexually liberated pragmatism of her grandmother Ollie (Lindsay Duncan) — and that’s before a chance encounter at a railway station threatens to derail her future.
