Summary

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of Hamilton, makes his directorial debut with this affecting, toe-tapping adaptation of the Off-Broadway musical. Set in New York City in 1990, it sees struggling composer Jonathan Larson (Andrew Garfield) on the cusp of turning 30. As he funnels all of his time into the showcase for his eight-years-in-the-making project Superbia, his relationships with his girlfriend (Alexandra Shipp) and best friend (Robin de Jesus) suffer. The original stage show by Rent creator Larson drew on Larson's own life, which was cut tragically short in 1996 when he died aged 35. He is duly honoured by Garfield here, who plays Larson with a frenzied intensity and sings his heart out in rousing musical numbers that illuminate the composer's artistic journey. It's one of the best performances of Garfield's career, and he's skilfully supported by Miranda, whose love for Larson's work is evident throughout.
