Review
David Brown
On its original terrestrial BBC run, the cases of Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) were shown as filler for a Saturday afternoon, but they deserved better. So it’s gratifying to see the buttoned-up sleuth enjoying a belated surge in popularity on Netflix.
Dismissed by some as a cosy whodunnit, it’s actually wildly inventive, while Monk himself remains an idiosyncratic figure, his obsessive- compulsive disorder “a blessing and a curse”. It makes him a brilliantly observant detective, but he’s also a slave to his condition.
