Review

David Butcher

Benedict Cumberbatch has a ball here playing the damaged hero of Edward St Aubyn’s lacerating novels. Sure, watching an upper-class drug addict careering around 1980s New York won’t be everyone’s idea of fun, but Cumberbatch makes it a joy to watch – in a decadent, depraved sort of way.

We’ve got used to seeing him in superhero roles like Sherlock and Doctor Strange, so it’s great to be reminded what a classy comic actor Cumberbatch is, equally at home with a sardonic one-liner or a pratfall – of which there are plenty.

Patrick is a wealthy waster, a brilliant wreck with a terrible pain from his childhood that no amount of uppers or downers can quite erase. When he gets a phone call telling him he needs to collect his dead father’s remains from New York, it sets up a plot you might precis as, “Seems I picked the wrong week to kick heroin.”
