France v Ireland 02.02
Summary
France v Ireland (Kick-off 8.00pm). Jill Douglas presents coverage of the opening match of the championship, held at Stade Velodrome in Marseille. Ireland defeated the French 32-19 in a thrilling encounter at Aviva Stadium last year and went on to emulate Les Bleus' 2022 achievement of winning the Grand Slam. However, both teams' may feel they have something to prove after suffering quarter-final exits from the World Cup when being among the favourites. With analysis from Brian O'Driscoll, Rory Best and Benjamin Kayser, commentary by Miles Harrison, Gordon D'Arcy and David Flatman, and reports from Gabriel Clarke

We can expect to hear the phrases “a new era” and “a fresh start” quite a bit in the next couple of months, as the start of this year’s Six Nations sees multiple teams turn over a new leaf. In the wake of last year’s World Cup, four out of six teams have new captains, and tonight’s opener between the two highest-ranked nations is all about proving a point.
As World Cup hosts, France had high hopes but fell painfully short in the quarter-finals, so tonight they’ll aim to cleanse the palate with a ship-steadying win in Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome. Ireland are in a similar spot, having arrived at the World Cup on top but losing in the last eight.
Ireland will also be without their all-time record points scorer Johnny Sexton due to retirement, and France will miss world-class scrum half Antoine Dupont — who has switched to rugby sevens in the hope of achieving glory at his home Olympics in Paris later this year.
Looking to fill those leadership voids will be new captains Grégory Alldritt for France and long-serving flanker Peter O’Mahony for the visitors. With perhaps the pick of the fixtures up first — for neutral viewers, at least — audiences couldn’t ask for a more exciting start.
