Episode 1: Liverpool
Summary
The comedian explores the stories of some of Britain's great conurbations, revealing their secret stories and the people behind their past, beginning with Liverpool. She visits the iconic Royal Albert Dock, Edge Hill - with its little-seen subterranean tunnel network - and the extraordinary Anglican Cathedral
Review
Jane Rackham
Most people visiting NEW Liverpool check out the Cavern, the cathedral and Anfield. She visits those places, but the first stop for Susan Calman, who’s exploring the “nooks and crannies, the unsung heroes and the scandals of our cities”, is the Bridewell nick where Charles Dickens was sworn in as a police constable.
She’s delving into the history of each city — in Liverpool that includes a 17th-century murder trial, the manager of a certain pop group and a rarely seen Victorian tiled floor. So this is more serious than her Grand Days Out series, but it’s every bit as joyous.
