After being cancelled in 2020, golf’s oldest major is back, and even though Covid restrictions are not due to be lifted until the day after the final round of the 149th Open, Royal St George’s in Sandwich will be at 80 per cent capacity, with up to 32,000 spectators permitted on each of the four days.
It’s ten years since the Kent course last hosted the Open, Northern Irishman Darren Clarke proving an especially popular winner in 2011. Could his compatriot Rory McIlroy, the winner in 2014, lift the Claret Jug this time round? He’s returning to form after a long fallow period, but the favourite is expected to be Spaniard Jon Rahm, fresh from his first major championship at the US Open last month.
