Conscious of the need to reach a new audience if it’s to survive long term, Star Trek has decided to enter its 60th anniversary year by targeting a teenage demographic with this cadets-in- training saga. A franchise that’s grown old with its viewers, this seems like a tough ask. But this latest spin-off stands a decent chance of breaking through, with newcomer Sandro Rosta in the central role of rule-bending, nonconformist Caleb Mir. He may be your textbook screw-up who needs to smarten up, but Rosta’s charisma ensures that Caleb feels morally redeemable.

And there to guide him and his fellow students through life on campus is the excellent Holly Hunter as loosey-goosey Captain Nahla Ake, while Paul Giamatti is on bulkhead-chewing duty as a piratical antagonist with a beef against Starfleet.
