Review

David Brown

PD James may have specialised in traditionally structured, elegantly written detective novels, but the crimes she dreamt up were chillingly malicious. Adam Dalgliesh, is the urbane but strangely unknowable DI who’s at odds with the boorish policing mentality of the era. He’s a published poet and the type of person who you feel would be more at home as an arts pundit on Radio 4 than on the force. Bertie Carvel (taking on a role played previously on TV by Roy Marsden and Martin Shaw) does his best to hint at a vulnerability beneath Dalgliesh’s glacial, still surface.
