Tiger King co-director Eric Goode’s new documentary, a gonzo exploration of illegal reptile smuggling, opens with an astonishing scene. It features Albert Killian, a Florida reptile handler who is holding – at a distance – a king cobra. “This animal has enough venom to drop an 8,000lb elephant,” he says, as the snake writhes and hisses. And then, suddenly, it strikes – just missing Killian.

This underground world is populated by characters as colourful as the reptiles themselves.
