Summer 1981, and a 13-year-old Brian Cox spends Wednesday evenings watching the man he calls “the greatest scientific communicator who ever lived” — Carl Sagan — present his landmark series, Cosmos. Sagan opened Cox’s eyes to an infinite universe of wonders, and was the inspiration for his subsequent career.
This programme first aired on Radio 4 in 2009 and is now repeated to mark 90 years since Sagan’s birth in November 1934 (he died in 1996). One of the most fascinating contributors is Ann Druyan, who co-wrote Cosmos with Sagan and married him the following year. But the real highlights are archive extracts from the man himself, whose words remain prescient to this day: “For the first time we have the power to decide the fate of our planet and ourselves.”
