A rerun of the early series on the BBC this year ought to have won Trying a few new fans, but it’s still the best British comedy you’re probably not watching.

London couple Nikki and Jason (Esther Smith and Rafe Spall) have achieved their long-cherished dream of adopting children, and now raise teenage siblings Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler (Cooper Turner) in the way we always knew they would: uncertainly and worrying about every little thing, but overcoming any difficulties with love.

Their major strife now is the appearance of the kids’ biological mother Kat (Charlotte Riley) and, as we rejoin the family for series five, a joint trip to a theme park brings out the couple’s rounded, complementary characters: Nikki is desperate not to lose Princess’s affection while Jason is calm and wise about it, but when action needs to be taken, Nikki has the practical solutions while Jason is busy riding rollercoasters.

It’s as deft and sweet as ever, with the usual funny subplots for Nikki’s sister Karen (Sian Brooke) and Jason’s dad Vic (Phil Davis).
