Review

Alex Berry

When the world around us feels a little heavy, the magic of the movies always offers an escape, even when those films also involve political unrest and grotesque monsters… But hey, there’s no grander celebration of cinema than the Academy Awards, and ITV once again takes the reins for live coverage of Hollywood’s glitziest event.

This year’s best-picture race is stacked with 10 dazzling contenders (see panel right), from sprawling political epic One Battle after Another — hotly tipped after its Bafta triumph — to the brooding vampire thriller Sinners, which has already made history by receiving the most nominations for a single film.

Guiding viewers through the glamour on this side of the Atlantic is Jonathan Ross, offering live commentary and behind-the-scenes insight. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Conan O’Brien will keep the Dolby Theatre crowd entertained as the ceremony unfolds from midnight onwards. Lights, camera, action!
