Episode 3: Cordoba and Costa del Sol
Summary
Michael visits Cordoba, focusing on the history of different civilisations that have influenced what it is to be Andalucian today, before entering Mesquita, considered to be one of the worlds greatest Islamic buildings. He also meets a family who use an ancient Roman technique to keep their courtyard cool and helps out in a local restaurant, where he learns how certain dishes have shaped the culture
Review

Córdoba is another of Michael Portillo’s favourite Spanish cities because it sums up all the civilisations and influences — Roman, Muslim and Christian — that have shaped modern-day Andalucia. Neatly illustrating this, he crosses a Roman bridge and enters the Mezquita, once a great Islamic mosque but now also home to a Catholic cathedral.
However, it’s mainly the heat that underscores this trip. He discovers how a simple ancient technique reduces the temperature of a baking-hot courtyard and learns how the dry summers are affecting millions of olive trees in the surrounding area. After that it’s back to his Carmona home for a traditional Spanish party. It’s quite dramatic.
