Drug-trafficker Max (Alfie Allen) isn’t having the best day. He’s alone in the desert, facing the wrong end of a rifle as his plans for a better life literally burn around him. But little does he know this encounter will probably end up being the fondest memory of a week that sees him accidentally steal nuclear material from his boss and go on the run from cartels, spies and terrorists, while hefting around enough uranium to blow up a city. And he’s forced to work alongside a ruthless killer (Shazad Latif) who won’t hesitate to betray him.
Based on a non-fiction book by William Langewiesche (Atomic Bazaar: Dispatches from the Underground World of Nuclear Trafficking), the world created here has a ring of authenticity, with rival government agencies, military forces and crime lords all jostling for supremacy. Though watching the sheer level of chaos and violence unfolding on screen, you can’t help but hope at least a little of it is artistic exaggeration, and not the real world in which we live.
