With its impeccable credentials apparent from the soundtrack (Gracie Abrams, Olivias Dean and Rodrigo), this is a sweet and witty entry in a bloated genre, written and directed by Megan Park, whose 2021 film The Fallout offered a smart, sensitive take on a high-school shooting.

Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) is a conscientious, stressed-out 17-year-old whose estranged grandfather leaves her and her slacker twin Connor (Keen Ruffalo) a small Canadian island. When Annie heads there for a summer vacation, she discovers buried family secrets, sceptical locals and an array of potential love interests with a variety of baggage.
