Episode 1: Mum's Birthday Voucher

Summary

Comedy focusing on members of the Jessop family as they navigate a combination of life's everyday challenges. Paul gives Rachel a family voucher for a theme park which is valid for six months. Just before it reaches its expiry date - and with a neighbour's dog in tow - the Jessops finally attempt to use it. Alison Steadman, Katherine Parkinson, Jim Howick, Tom Basden, Freya Parks and Tori Allen-Martin star

Review

David Butcher

A comedy about a chaotic family’s mishaps might sound unrelaxing, but this is funny, cathartic stuff. Writer Tom Basden originally devised it as a 2020 Comedy Playhouse called Pandemonium and has now been given a full series to plot various kinds of mayhem for the Jessop family.

We start on Rachel’s birthday, as husband Paul attempts to give her breakfast in bed – and all you need to know about how that goes is in the later aside, “Maya slipped on some salmon…” Katherine Parkinson and Jim Howick underplay the couple nicely, with Alison Steadman in her element as Paul’s mum Sue, forever dropping round to add a layer of confusion and ply her son with cake.

Basden, who you may recognise from his role as local newspaper editor Matt in After Life, plays Rachel’s uncool brother, who brings round boxes of Warhammer figures and has a great line about his dating style: “I’m a bit like a Pep Guardiola side… I operate a very high press. Don’t give the opponent any space.”
