Don’t feel bad if the injustice at the heart of this documentary had simply never occurred to you. Many of us will have enjoyed watching tennis and/or wheelchair tennis without thinking, OK, but what if you have a disability that doesn’t involve a wheelchair?
Comedian Adam Hills was born without a right foot. He’s a good tennis player — we see his collection of teenage trophies when he visits his mother in Australia. But the conundrum of tournament tennis is that you can play if you’re able-bodied or use a wheelchair — but for players like Hills, no dice.
So he sets out to tackle the anomaly in an uplifting and funny film that introduces us and Hills to the growing sport of Para-Standing Tennis. He also bumps into Andy Murray, plays Pat Cash and takes on the Wimbledon powers that be.
