Summary

Adventure directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. Following King Richard's death in France, Robin Longstride and his companions return to England where they stumble into a plot by the scheming Sir Godfrey to dupe Richard's successor, the weak King John, and allow a French invasion. Faced with treachery on all sides, Robin must use all his guile to prevent the English crown from being overthrown.

Russell Crowe reunited with his Gladiator director Ridley Scott for this retelling of the Robin Hood legend. Crowe plays deadly archer Robin Longstride, who assumes the guise of Robin of Loxley in order to leave the Crusades behind and return to England. Scott presents a politically complex vision of the tale, with Mark Strong's royal adviser deliberately whipping up hatred in the North to smooth France's way as conquerors. Crowe's romance with Cate Blanchett's Marion is well handled but still a distraction, while the scenes of mead-quaffing and folk dancing serve little purpose. Scott's film has tremendous strengths - fine battle scenes, a strongly realised interpretation of events and a commanding lead performance - but the weak spots diminish the overall effect, leaving it a valiant try rather than an unqualified success.
