For a bunch of spies sidelined after tanking their careers, the Slow Horses are attracting an awful lot of attention. Someone is going to the trouble of assassinating former members, while those still rattling around Slough House are finding their bank balances as desolate as their job prospects.

Payday has come and gone without a wage packet in sight and, when enquiries are made, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) discovers that he and his team have been erased from the MI5 database. It’s one way of cutting costs.

Until his bosses cough up, Lamb decides to go on strike. Don’t expect the series itself to slow down in solidarity, though: this latest run combines two of Mick Herron’s novels, leaving plenty of ground to cover. If the rumours turn out to be true, perhaps those in charge fear that, before too long, Jack Lowden may be whisked away on 007 duties? For now, though, his alter ego River is firmly in the spotlight, saying goodbye to someone close and hello to a face he’d much rather have kept at a distance.
