Episode 1: Season 1, Episode 1
Summary
Part one of two. Comedian and presenter Dara Ó Briain explores the immense power of Italy's most active volcanoes. He begins with a mission to uncover the inner workings of volcanoes, starting out in Sicily, home to the mighty Mount Etna - Europe's largest and most active volcano
Review
David Butcher
The comedian sits in a cable car, looking unhappy. He hates cable cars. “My least favourite form of transport,” he mutters, “a very thin bucket… There’s something wrong about it.” He shudders as his car passes over a pylon.
So what has brought him to this? It’s the chance to go up Mount Etna and walk on the stark, alien slopes. Because Dara O Briain may hate cable cars but he loves volcanoes, as you can sense from the way he describes their “raw untamed power” and how their “fiery engines” reveal “Earth’s molten heart” — classic volcano documentary language.
The catch is that a TV camera can’t always do justice to an exploding mountain, and microphones only hint at the weird, door-slamming “whoomf!” sounds coming from the crater on Stromboli. But we do get a sense of big, primordial strangeness and Dara is just the man to take it on and add levity to the mix — as when he explains the process of eruptions using an Italian chocolate doughnut, the suitably named bombolone. Concludes tomorrow.
