Review

Frances Taylor

Keira Knightley makes the well-trodden foray from film to television in this glossy, suspenseful thriller series. It’s Christmas in London (as almost every tinsel-bedecked scene reminds us) and Helen (Knightley), the supportive wife of MP Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), is organising a party to raise money for charity.

But Helen leads a double life. She is a spy who passes her husband’s political secrets to the mysterious organisation headed up by Reed (Sarah Lancashire), known as the Black Doves. Helen is not only handy with a handgun, she has been having an affair with a civil servant, Jason (Andrew Koji). When he is assassinated, she wants to know why — and whether she has been compromised.

For back-up, Reed drafts in hitman Sam (Ben Whishaw) and he and Helen embark on a blood-splattered mission that turns out to have more far-reaching consequences than either had anticipated…
