Episode 1: Episode 1
Summary
Documentary following the staff of Network Rail, which operates the country's railway tracks, focusing on Birmingham New Street station. Engineers battle the elements after extensive flooding, while beleaguered staff deal with stranded passengers demanding answers. Graffiti artist Banksy leaves Birmingham rail engineers a gift spray-painted on to one of the walls - all done under his usual veil of secrecy - and train manager Adam is faced with a passenger without a ticket
Review
David Butcher
“There’s a saying about people in a brewery: that’s Network Rail,” says a disgruntled passenger at Birmingham New Street, a junior doctor who has only slept for four hours in the last 24.
But the programme as a whole – the first of a series – gives the impression that staff are in fact cheerfully well organised, even when the elements are against them. Heavy rainfall (the series was filmed in the run-up to Christmas) causes a flood on a section of track and the “orange army” of trackside workers under manager Ryan set about trying to un-flood it, while back at New Street a shortage of replacement buses causes aggro and angry questions for Customer Assistant Andy, whose best response is, “This is a bald patch, not a crystal ball.”
