Review

David Brown

The Little House on the Prairie books have long presented westward expansion as an inspiring tale of pioneers and possibility. But the notion of manifest destiny has, in more recent years, become decidedly more problematic.

The makers of this new Netflix reimagining So, alongside the Ingalls girls in their bonnets have clearly decided you can’t remove every trace of earnest frontier idealism, otherwise Pa’s wagon may as well be replaced with a motorhome. Instead, they’ve opted to nudge the camera slightly and allow those who previously remained out of shot to step fully into frame.

So, alongside the Ingalls girls in their bonnets and gingham dresses playing in the tall grasses of Kanas, attention is also paid to those whose land is being settled, specifically the Osage people forced to give up what was once theirs.

The result is a heartfelt family drama that, for all its sweeping vistas, also dares to ask some difficult questions about the true price of progress.
