Cathedral Music In Crisis

Summary

Eleanor Oldroyd investigates the major challenges facing some of Britain's most cherished and historic musical foundations, as the Cathedral Music Trust warns of a sustainability crisis for Britain's cathedral choirs. Eleanor travels to Sheffield to discover what happened after the controversial disbanding of its cathedral choir, and visits other cities around the country to examine how different teams are wrestling with dire financial pressures, falling recruitment and accusations of exclusivity

Review

Michael Hodges

When Sheffield Cathedral Choir was forcibly disbanded in 2020, the members formed the now necessarily peripatetic Steel City Choristers, who have performed in pubs and on allotments across the region, as well as in cathedrals and churches.

Eleanor Oldroyd travels to Sheffield to hear their story and also takes a wider look at the dire situation faced by many cathedral choirs around the country.
