A drama, inspired by real events, that’s roughly communist Poland’s answer to Toxic Town. On the eve of a visit to her Silesian home town from President Brezhnev, a young doctor (Joanna Kulig) notices evidence of lead poisoning in local children, surely caused by the nearby smelting factory. She protests, but exposing the dangers of the district’s major employer risks alienating her neighbours — and potentially provoking lethal retribution from the Soviet state.
It’s a passionate tribute.
