Review

Jack Seale

A new drama based on a book by Slow Horses creator Mick Herron? That guarantees you one thing at least: an impeccable cast. Ruth Wilson and Emma Thompson are predictably terrific as inquisitive Oxford art restorer Sarah and abrasive private investigator Zoë, who become a sleuthing pair when a mysterious house explosion forms their route into a conspiracy that goes to the heart of the British government.

And when we peek into the room in Whitehall where shady shenanigans are afoot, we’re treated to a second double act featuring Darren Boyd as a supercilious civil servant and the always brilliant Adeel Akhtar as a bumbling intelligence agent.

As Wilson and Thompson’s partnership slowly gels and the actors flip ably from sharply witty to tenderly human as required, a twisting narrative slowly grips: by the end of the first two episodes, there’s no chance you won’t want to see the rest.
