England v Argentina

Summary

England v Argentina (Kick-off 8.00pm). All the action from the first match in Pool D, held at Stade de Marseille in France. The sides also met in the pool stage four years ago, when England recorded a 39-10 victory with the help of tries by six different scorers. The victors went on to reach the final, where they were defeated by South Africa, while the Pumas missed out on a place in the knockout stage. Mark Pougatch presents, with analysis from Jonny Wilkinson, Clive Woodward and Lawrence Dallaglio, commentary by Nick Mullins and Ben Kay, and reports from Jill Douglas and Ugo Monye

Review

Max Copeman

With the curtains raised last night, the World Cup now takes flight with a quadruple header. Action begins in Saint-Étienne, where Italy face Namibia (kick-off 12 noon, ITV1), who only have four wins against top-tier rugby nations in their history — although two were against the Azzurri…

Attention then moves to Bordeaux, as top-ranked Ireland will want to build momentum against Romania (2:30pm, ITV1), before there is a first glimpse of Australia against Georgia at the Stade de France (5pm, ITV1) — and it’s crunch time for England (8pm, ITV1) in Marseille. Steve Borthwick’s men arrive in France beleaguered by suspensions and poor form, so an opener against Argentina is an acid test that many believe they will fail.
