Episode 6: Phone-In-Murder

Summary

When a woman reports a murder and is then found strangled, the team is left wondering whether she was reporting her own murder. Brilliant-though-slightly neurotic detective Neville Parker attempts to lead this perplexing case. Caribbean-set detective drama, starring Ralf Little, Josephine Jobert and Don Warrington

The formula of a Death in Paradise pre-titles sequence has, up until now, been fixed. The scene is set, the suspects are introduced, and a body is found just before the incongruous twang of that upbeat Jamaican ska theme tune kicks in. The very last thing we expect to hear is a cry of “She’s alive!” after someone discovered lying face down in a swimming pool is pulled from the water.

So here it seems we have a murder mystery without a murder. Or is it? As we see, the would-be victim was on the phone reporting a suspicious death just before she took a dive – and when Neville (Ralf Little) spots signs of strangulation on her throat, he starts to wonder whether she was alerting the authorities to what she thought was her own impending demise.

Unfortunately, the woman in question gets rushed to hospital, so answers aren’t immediately forthcoming. But the new Saint-Marie police team – including a freshly promoted Naomi (Shantol Jackson) and welcome new recruit Darlene (Ginny Holder) – waste no time in quizzing those with motives for wanting her dead.
