Frances Taylor

Sounding as though it’s been commissioned from the dictaphone of Alan Partridge, this one-off documentary finds 5’s news anchor in the US delving into the death penalty debate. Meeting people on both sides of the argument, he’s ultimately pondering if capital punishment should be reintroduced in the UK.

It’s a weighty issue, but in between the often-illuminating interviews with inmates and former wardens, it all too often tips into grim rubbernecking, as Walker visits an execution chamber (“I wonder if British jails could ever have a room like this to watch our own citizens be put to death?” he ponders) before, ghoulishly, getting a step-by-step walkthrough on how hangings were carried out.
