Cries of “Take it off! Take it off! Take it off!” will be heard up and down the nation today – and not because “exercise more, eat better, get a hobby” are set to be deleted from a list of already-defeated new year’s resolutions. No, The Masked Singer is back for a fourth series, with a bamboozling fresh collection of celebrities ready to remove their foamy costume heads and reveal their identities.

Where else on TV would you see Michael Owen dressed as a stack of doughnuts (something judge Jonathan Ross says he “still thinks very fondly of”) or Charlotte Church as a mushroom, as we did in series three? Bring on the surrealism and silliness, and let the guessing games begin.
