Kingdom Uncovered: Inside Saudi Arabia

Summary

As Saudi Arabia bids to host the FIFA World Cup, a female journalist goes undercover to investigate what life is like in this increasingly autocratic state in the Arabian Peninsula. At great personal risk, the journalist discovers evidence of illegal working conditions at Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's most high-profile project, violent protests by workers at another site, and claims by others that they are treated like slaves. She films those caught up in a ferocious crackdown on people who criticise the prince's plans, and obtains rare footage of shocking conditions in Saudi's detention system

Review

John Aizlewood

From the outside, Saudi Arabia gives the impression of a country evolving under the forwards-looking guidance of de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Women being allowed to drive, concerts by Alicia Keys and Pharrell Williams, the Vision 2003 project (which incorporates The Line, a $1 trillion project), and the likely award of the 2034 World Cup. But perhaps everything is not quite what it seems.

Undercover journalist ‘Noura’ unearths a cornucopia of (unverified, although the footage appears damning) horror stories. She investigates the overcrowded, disease-ridden Jizan detention centre where detainees sleep in binbags, and the migrants who form 75 per cent of the Saudi workforce.Their passports are confiscated and there’s no access to water or electricity.
