This moving, bruising documentary makes a key point about the so-called War on Terror: it didn’t just devastate Iraq and Afghanistan, it devastated those who fought it. Bafta- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Deeyah Khan travels across America and hears from US veterans about how their time in uniform still haunts them. Since 9/11, we’re told, four times as many veterans have died by suicide as died in action.

“I lost me,” one says. “I lost humanity. I lost empathy and compassion.” It’s a running theme: that the military mindset turned ordinary soldiers into sadists. Several recall the random brutality of searching local homes and leaving them destroyed. Some of the stories are terrible, including accounts of incidents they believe were war crimes. “I was evil,” says a veteran who’s now a campaigner. “My purpose is to prevent the next me.”

It’s a disquieting film, full of men who look scarred and broken. When four of them sit down with Iraqi victims of the war, it’s tense but feels like a minute dose of healing
