The process allows victims the chance to talk about the impact of a crime and seek answers about why it happened, and can provide perpetrators with a new perspective. Review
There’s an alternative to locking up criminals and forgetting about them, and this programme, presented by Hilary Ineomo-Marcus, himself a former prisoner, is enthralling about its potential.
Restorative justice – which is communication between victim and perpetrator — isn’t a replacement for punishment, it’s an optional extra process. A grass-roots movement in the 1970s, it was successfully taken up by Sir Charles Pollard, Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police from 1991 to 2002, and is now official UK policy.
One case history, in which a man recalls meeting his twin brother’s murderer, is intensely moving.
